Characteristics of a boston public schools teacher

The Boston Public Schools (BPS) creates a safe, nurturing environment for all students to be successful. We know that in order to have the most talented and effective teachers as part of our team, we must draw from individuals representing diverse educational, cultural, racial, and linguistic backgrounds. BPS seeks teachers who embody the following six characteristics:

  • Diversity & Cultural Responsiveness - We are developing a teaching staff that is representative of the racial, cultural, and linguistic diversity of our students, and we value effective educators of all backgrounds who recognize the importance of providing culturally responsive pedagogy.

  • Accountability for Student Learning - Our teachers are passionate and optimistic about their students, their content areas, and the teaching profession.

  • Strong Content Knowledge - Our teachers demonstrate real-world application and multidisciplinary understanding of their subject matter in their teaching practice.

  • Equitable Instruction - Our teachers challenge, motivate and engage every student, regardless of racial, cultural, or linguistic background.

  • Partnership with Parents and Families - Our teachers must understand that partnerships with parents, families, and communities make successful schools and districts.

  • Reflection and Collaboration - Our teachers regularly reflect on their practice, seek constructive feedback, and commit to continuous growth and development.
